Securely support the lower bracket so that
there is no danger of it falling.
NOTE:
Remove the lower ring nut with the steering nut
wrench “2”.

                                                             Bends/cracks/damage → Replace.
1. Wash:
 • Bearings                                               EAS23140

 • Bearing races                                          INSTALLING THE STEERING HEAD
                                                          1. Lubricate:
           Recommended cleaning solvent                     • Upper bearing
            Kerosene                                        • Lower bearing
                                                            • Bearing races
2. Check:
 • Bearings                                                          Recommended lubricant
 • Bearing races                                                      Lithium-soap-based grease
   Damage/pitting → Replace.
3. Replace:                                               2. Install:
 • Bearings                                                • Lower ring nut “1”
 • Bearing races                                           • Rubber washer “2”

a. Remove the bearing races from the steering
   head pipe “1” with a long rod “2” and hammer.

 • Lock washer “4”
   Refer to “CHECKING AND ADJUSTING
   THE STEERING HEAD” on page 3-33.

3. Install:
 • Upper bracket
 • Steering stem nut
NOTE:
Temporarily tighten the steering stem nut.
4. Install:
 • Front fork legs
   Refer to “FRONT FORK” on page 4-73.
NOTE:
Temporarily tighten the upper and lower bracket
pinch bolts.
5. Tighten:
 • Steering stem nut
